What is Germ City? The Germ City: Clean Hands, Healthy People program is a real "hands-on" approach to hand washing education that teams education with a handicapped accessible, light-proof tunnel with ultraviolet lights. After children receive a brief lesson on hand washing, they get to put their knowledge to use! Visitors to the traveling exhibit, which can be set up at fairs, workplaces and other sites, cover their hands with a special lotion and then wash as usual. Then they enter a tunnel equipped with a black light, which makes any remaining lotion glow. Most people see glowing spots on their hands and around their eyes, nose and mouth — graphic proof that unwashed or underwashed hands can spread germs.
