A:  Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with the office location at 295 N 8th Ave, Burwell, NE.

Q:  What is public health?
A:  Public health is an organized process which protects and promotes physical and mental health and works toward preventing disease, injury, disability, and premature death.  Public health services are population based services which are focused on improving the health status of the entire population as opposed to the treatment of individuals.  Public health professionals monitor and diagnose health concerns of entire communities while promoting health behaviors and lifestyles all the time.

Q: How is Loup Basin Public Health Department (LBPHD) funded?

A: The creation of the health department is funded by the Nebraska Tobacco Settlement Bill, LB 692.   The Health Department also writes grants, partners with research institutions and works with the State of Nebraska Health and Human Services to provide programs to promote healthy behaviors and lifestyles.

Q: I found a dead bird.  Do I test it for West Nile, or how should I dispose of it?

A:    During the summer months the health department is collecting birds that are in good condition (no insects or strong odor and eyes are not sunken in) for West Nile testing.  Place bird into a plastic zip-lock type bag and contact the Loup Basin Health Department 866.522.5795 for instructions of how to submit the bird for testing.

If the bird is not being tested safe disposal of dead birds can be done in several ways:
  • Use a shovel to place it in a plastic bag.  Another option would be to reach into a plastic bag and using the bag like a glove, pick up the bird and turn the bag inside out. The bag should be tied and placed in a covered trash receptacle, followed by a thorough hand washing.
  • Dead birds can be buried using a shovel.
  • If in a rural area where burning of trash is allowed, the bird may be burned.
